Burglary/House Breaking
Pays loss of or damage to the property or any part thereof contained within the premises specified in the schedule or any damage to the premises for which the insured is legally responsible following housebreaking involving:
"Violent or forcible entry to or exit from the premises causing visible damage to the premises or part thereof."
- A duly filled in proposal form to be signed and submitted
- Under insurance and contribution apply.
Exclusions
- Dishonesty on the part of employee/s
- Theft of money and other securities
- Mysterious disappearance
- Loss of or damage due to fire or natural perils
- Theft that is not forceful e.g. use of a key, shoplifting or use of a trick.

Fire
Building, stock, furniture & fittings and contents are insured against Fire, Explosion, Lightning, Earthquake, Riot & Strikes, Malicious Damage, Storm, Flood, Burst Pipes and Impact and other natural perils.
Other related risks like malicious damage, damage by objects falling from aircraft, etc., can also be covered under this policy.
Underwriting Guidelines
- Duly filled in and signed proposal form to be submitted.
- A list of all items must be obtained with information on value and any identification on them such as make and serial number where available.
Claim conditions
- To notify Reliance Insurance immediately in case of a loss
- To report the occurrence to police
- To take reasonable precautions to avoid loss
- If fraud is suspected, all benefits under the policy are forfeited
- Claims are subject to contribution, average and subrogation.
Goods-in-Transit
Goods-in-Transit insurance covers loss or damage to property caused by fire, theft or accidental means while the said property is in transit by road or rail or while housed temporarily in the course of transit. The cover will extend to the loading or unloading of the property with respect to the said transit
- Single transit policy as the statement implies for one transit only
- Open Policy: This is for clients requiring cover for more than one transit within one year period. Each and every consignment can be declared on a monthly or periodical basis.
The claims procedure
G.I.T. policies do not differ from other insurance policies where general requirements are:
- Immediate claim notification to the underwriter.
- A statement of loss or damage sustained including proof of value ownership/ possession.
- Police abstracts etc.
All Risks
Provides cover against accidental loss or damage to specified items including theft that is not forceful. This cover provides additional cover to that provided under fire and burglary sections.
Provides very wide cover in respect of specified portable items, which are, carried outside the house e.g. cameras, radio, jewellery etc. This section covers risks like accidental damage and theft that’s not forceful. Workmen’s’ Compensation Section(recently amended Oct 07). This covers domestic servants e.g. house helps, watchmen, shamba boys and chauffeurs. The cover provided is in respect of injury, death or disease arising out of and in the course of employment.The Workmen’s’ Compensation Act 1987 requires all employers to compensate employees who are injured or die or contract diseases arising out of and in the course of employment.
Exclusions
- Loss or damage to money or securities
- Loss due to theft by employee
- Loss or damage arising from tear and wear.
Underwriting Guidelines
Domestic Package
The building is covered against the following risks:
Natural causes e.g. earthquake, storm and tempest, lightning etc.
Human causes e.g. riot and strike, malicious damage, theft etc.
Chemical related causes e.g. explosion of domestic gas cylinders etc.
Miscellaneous caused e.g. bursting and overflowing of water tanks, apparatus, pipes and impact by road vehicles and animals.
Contents Section
Contents are defined as consisting of furniture, household goods and personal effects of every description, the property of the insured or any member of his family normally residing with him, and fixtures and fittings, the insured’s own or for which he is legally responsible, not being landlord’s fixtures and fittings.
Liability Section
This section covers third parties who sustain injury or die whilst at the private dwelling house due to the negligence of the owner or occupier.
Exclusions
- This policy has several exclusions as follows:-
- Homes located in and around slum areas
- Temporary and semi-permanent houses e.g. timber and mabati houses
- Loss or damage caused by a member of the household
- Loss or damage caused when the home is left unfurnished or unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days
- Damage to electronic and electrical items caused by power fluctuations.
